Smoked salmon from British export China with new packaging

For Scottish smoked salmon producers, the biggest sales barrier is nothing more than “British Brexit”, expanding the market outside the EU is a smart move to minimize political influence. To develop the Chinese market, John Ross of the UK spent a long time looking for a suitable dealer.

Victoria Leigh-Pearson, Director of Marketing at John Ross, told UCN: "The Chinese market is very large. The smoked salmon market has great growth potential, but it is also very complicated. We just opened up some sales channels for Chinese hotels, restaurants and cafes. A good starting point, we must start our business steadily and efficiently. In the second half of this year and 2020, we will continue to expand the channels of the Chinese market."

The salmon products of the John Ross brand are sold in 36 countries around the world. Leigh-Pearson believes that the process of marketing in the direction of diversification can not be stagnant, and it is necessary to strengthen cooperation with dealers in the future.

“The biggest uncertainty in the European market is the so-called 'tariff'. In order to alleviate the delay, we have done a lot of work with the supply chain partners, and the customer resources are vital, we will not treat them differently,” she said.

At the Brussels show, John Ross launched a new packaging product that will be fully promoted in the UK and overseas markets in the second half of this year. Leigh-Pearson believes that the new product is more attractive and modern, especially on the supermarket shelves, giving it a real meaning.

In April of this year, the John Ross processing plant completed the relocation. “The new plant is located in Aberdeen, Scotland, with better location, updated equipment, better management, better product quality and higher profit margins,” Leigh-Pearson said. “Our salmon raw materials are sourced from Scotland. A small part comes from Norway, we only do A-grade smoked products."
