Philippine side lifts ban on imports of fisheries from Fukushima

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with visiting Philippine President Duterte at the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday (May 31). Duterte decided to lift the import ban on aquatic products in the county since the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Abe said that he will continue to seek countries to ease import restrictions and strive to eliminate negative images.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Philippines has stopped importing aquatic products after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, including four species of Fukushima Prefecture, such as the mountain nymph, the jade fish, the three-toothed squid and the sweetfish. Abe and Duterte held a joint press conference after the meeting and announced the lifting of the above import restrictions.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries pointed out that this was the first time that Japan’s embargo measures were lifted after Japan’s complaint against South Korea’s food import restrictions was lost. During the talks, Abe also requested the Philippine side to cancel the inspection report on radioactive materials submitted for other Fukushima County aquatic products as soon as possible.

Abe and Duterte confirmed at the meeting that Japan will steadily promote the policy of supporting the Philippines infrastructure. The two sides fully fulfilled the UN Security Council resolutions that promoted the denuclearization of North Korea and reached an agreement to strengthen cooperation in solving North Korea’s abduction of Japanese issues as soon as possible.
