2019 International Pig Industry Forum - Focus on African Hog

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is more active in 2018. According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) report, nearly 5,000 ASF epidemics have been reported in more than 20 countries around the world. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China, as of January 16, 2019, there were 102 cases of African swine fever in China, distributed in 24 provinces, 74 prefectures, and 84 districts and counties, showing a punctual sporadic situation. There is a concentrated situation; from August 3, 2018 to January 14, 2019, the African pigs have smashed a total of 916,000 heads of pigs nationwide.

In less than half a year, the impact of African swine fever on China has caused economic losses of more than 1 billion yuan. While it poses serious challenges to the development of the pig industry, the impact on pork and pork and food supply chains in China and the world continues. Many countries ban imported pig products and pork products from African swine fever areas. It has aroused great attention from the government, industry, research media and the community, and scientific prevention and control, kitchen and kitchen residues (shuishui) full chain management, vaccine development is the three key points. Scientifically prevent and control African swine fever, bio-safety measures undoubtedly become the top priority. How can farms choose the best plan according to their own conditions to prevent and control African swine fever? What are the measures for the control of live pig and pork products and food circulation? In particular, what are the practical ways to change the habits of kitchen waste to feed pigs for thousands of years? What are the risks involved in the production, transportation and disposal of kitchen and kitchen residues?

African swine fever virus is extremely stubborn, and vaccination is an option. Currently, 15 research institutions in at least 8 countries around the world are working on ASFV vaccine development. In January 2019, China launched the R&D project of African swine fever virus gene deletion live vaccine. In October 2018, Zoetis was granted an exclusive patent for the “Attenuated African swine fever vaccine based on MGF gene deletion” published by the University of Connecticut. In March 2018, Spanish scientists published research on the prevention of ASFV infection in the absence of attenuated live vaccines of certain genes. At the end of 2017, the EU launched an innovative initiative against the ASFV vaccine.

In the next three years, African swine fever will be found in the world for more than 100 years. In the next 3 to 5 years, whether the African swine fever vaccine will be industrialized will have important practical significance for the prevention and control of African epidemics. At present, what new progress has been made in the development of cutting-edge technologies for ASF inactivated vaccines, subunit vaccines, live attenuated vaccines, nucleic acid vaccines, and live attenuated vector vaccines? What are the differences in epidemiology and genetic characteristics of Chinese African swine fever and the focus of vaccine research and development abroad? In response to these problems, Lega Media's "International Pig Industry" and the international veterinary organization TAFS will organize the 2019 International Pig Industry Science Forum, which will invite international and domestic experts, scholars, veterinarians and entrepreneurs in the field of piglet prevention and control in Africa. Explore issues such as the development of African swine vaccines, scientific prevention and control, and the management of kitchen and kitchen residues.
