US imports of smoked salmon increased by 2,000 tons year-on-year

In the first five months of this year, the number of imported smoked salmon in the United States increased by 2,000 tons year-on-year, or 7%, and the import value was 44 million US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 23%. Foppen's Dutch company exports 260 tons of frozen smoked salmon to the United States, valued at $14.3 million. Exports and amounts are basically the same as in the same period last year, while its Greek company exports 469 tons of smoked salmon to the United States. The value is $11.9 million. Foppen products are mainly sold in Costco supermarkets in the United States.

In the first five months of this year, the United States imported 340 tons of Chilean smoked salmon, an increase of 46% year-on-year and an import value of US$7.6 million. Imported German smoked salmon 96.8 tons, valued at 2.3 million US dollars. Imports to Poland fell by 39% to 62.2 tons, valued at $1.9 million. The United States exported 215.2 tons of smoked salmon, an increase of 19.4% year-on-year and an export value of 2.1 million US dollars.

In 2016, the United States imported 5,280 tons of smoked squid, a decrease of 7.3% year-on-year, and an import value of 107.2 million US dollars, down 4% year-on-year. The Dutch smoked salmon accounted for 31.4%, the export volume was 35.2 million US dollars, the Greek smoked salmon accounted for 22.3%, and the export volume was 28.5 million US dollars. This means that in 2016, Dutch and Greek smoked salmon accounted for 53% of the US market, ranking the top two, followed by Chile, with exports exceeding 1,000 tons, valued at $18.6 million.
