Japan responds to the Korean seafood ban

According to comprehensive reports, the Korean government has continued to ban the import of aquatic products from eight counties such as Fukushima, Japan. On the 30th local time, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced that it would strengthen inspections of imported aquatic products in Korea on the grounds of “guaranteeing food safety”.

According to the report, the Japanese government will begin to strengthen monitoring and inspection of some Korean imports of aquatic products from June 1. It is reported that these aquatic products include halibut, frozen burrs for raw food, thin-shelled cockles and sea urchins.

According to reports, the Japanese government has only conducted about 20% of the monitoring of the total imports of halibut in South Korea, and by June, this figure will increase to 40%. For the burly, slippery shell cockles and sea urchins, the Japanese government will also strengthen the inspection ratio, from the current 10% to 20%.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare said that the intensive monitoring and inspection was to “ensure food safety” before the summer of the increase in food poisoning cases.

However, Japanese media reported that such special inspections for specific countries were “extremely rare” or to respond to South Korea’s continued ban on imports of aquatic products from eight counties such as Fukushima.

After the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan in 2011, the South Korean government banned the import of aquatic products from eight counties such as Fukushima, Japan. Japan has therefore complained to the World Trade Organization (WTO). On April 11 this year, the results of the WTO review were released and Japan was defeated.

The South Korean government said it welcomes the WTO ruling and will continue to ban the import of Fukushima aquatic products. After Japan’s claim was revoked by the WTO’s superior committee, Japan’s “protest” was proposed, and the United States expressed its full support for the Japanese position.
